Korean singer Rain was also a target, after naked pictures of him, obtained while he was in a gym shower, hit the front page. Last year photos of Gillian Chung backstage getting changed, shot through an open window, caused an outcry with other top entertainers like Jackie Chan protesting that the media had gone too far. The Hong Kong tabloid press is renowned for its muckraking tactics – frequently employing long range paparrazi shots and routinely sifting through celebrities’ garbage, and printing the contents. Chen has had at least one endorsement contract dropped, and the fallout looks set to continue over the next few weeks, especially if the hotly anticipated videos are released online. The debacle is also sure to set off a fierce debate over celebrity privacy in the city. Interpol have been called in, with some bloggers outside Hong Kong claiming to have videos set for release tomorrow. Full-frontal photos apparently showing the celebs naked, and engaged in sex acts, have spread over the internet despite nine arrests. HK courts have ordered the arrest of anyone distributing the images- but apparently, too late.
It is Chung who is alleged to have tried to kill herself, after the news broke and she was quickly dumped from a Disneyland promotion she was due to attend with her twins co-star Charlene Choi.
The images were quickly leaked, causing uproar across the city and captivating the tabloid press.The photos supposedly include not only Chen, but Australian/Chinese glamor girl Cecilia Cheung (now wife of long-time bad boy Nicholas Tse), model Bobo Chan and most sensationally – Gillian Chung, one half of the sweet-and-wholesome-looking pop superstars “Twins”. Chen had apparently taken his computer into a shop to be fixed, without removing hundreds of incriminating and explicit photographs of him engaged in sex with other top HK stars. The mother of all celebrity sex scandals has erupted in Hong Kong over the last week, leaving several top stars in hiding, nine people arrested and one popular singer allegedly on suicide watch. At the centre of the scandal is actor/musician Edison Chen, who starred in the movie “Infernal Affairs” and also released an album produced by Kanye West, and appeared on M-Flo’s latest CD here in Japan.
